The CEE Centre for Young Black Professionals is Seeking Board Members!
The CEE Centre for Young Black Professionals (CEE) is a community-based, non-profit organization dedicated to addressing economic issues affecting Black youth (18-29 years old). Located in Toronto, with multiple program sites, CEE’s mission is to advance the economic and social development of Black youth facing multiple barriers to employment. We achieve career development and job readiness using holistic, person-centered and culturally relevant programs and services.
CEE stands for ‘Careers Education Empowerment’, which encompasses what we do; support young people to build meaningful careers through experiential education and promoting personal empowerment. Since 2013 over 1800 individuals have been engaged in a series of events and conferences held by CEE. But the core of our work are intensive 7-9 month programs for individuals who are out of school, out of work and facing major barriers. These programs include in-class sessions, paid job placements and wrap around supports. We have graduated 82 individuals in 4 years, achieving an 80% retention rate with 80% of graduates entering employment or post-secondary education.
CEE is an exciting new start-up building a strong buzz in community with its innovative, person centred approach to economic development. We’ve been featured in SHARE Magazine (2016), the Toronto Star (2014 and 2015), on Global News (2015) and Metro Morning (2015). Further in 2016 we received the Jamaican Canadian Association of Nurses annual award for innovative community work.
Who we’re looking for:
We are looking for people to join our organization who believe in the incredible potential of Black youth in Toronto and are dedicated to leveraging community resources to support them in achieving their dreams.
We are currently looking for motivated volunteers with a range of skills. Skill areas that are of particular interest include: Human Resources, governance and policy development; marketing and communication; fundraising; law and public policy advocacy. We are also looking for candidates with strong networks among Black professionals, as well as people with experience and/or contacts in CEE program areas: IT, the culinary and hospitality industry and the construction building trades.
We are also looking to expand the diversity of our board to better reflect the communities we serve in the following areas: youth (30 and under); people with lived experience of the barriers faced by CEE members; members of the GTA’s Muslim communities; and members of the Somali community and other continental African communities.
Commitment: Participation on the board involves a commitment of approximately 6-10 hours a month, including participation at monthly board meetings and a monthly board committee. Meetings are generally held on weekday evenings.
