shad300Shad (Shadrach Kabango) is a Juno Award-winning rapper and songwriter born in Kenya and raised in London, Ontario. His first album was released in 2005 and financed by winning the $17,500 Rhythm of the Future unsigned talent competition hosted by 91.5FM The Beat in Kitchener-Waterloo. Since then, Shad had released 3 more albums, all to considerable acclaim. He has earned multiple Juno Award nominations – including a win for Best Rap Recording in 2011 – and a record-tying 3 short-list nominations for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize (2008, 2010, 2014). He has toured Canada, the U.S., and Europe extensively, and received praise from the likes of Pitchfork Media, The National Post, and The Village Voice. His peers in Canadian Hip Hop recently voted him the 2nd Greatest Rapper Ever in Canada in a poll produced by the CBC.

In addition to his career as a rapper, Shad has pursued a variety of interests both within and outside of music. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University (2005) and an M.A. from Simon Fraser University (2011). He participated in the CBC’s Canada Reads debates in 2012, successfully defending Carmen Aguirre’s memoir Something Fierce, and more recently, Shad hosted CBC’s flagship arts and culture show q (2015-2016), and also hosted a 4-part documentary on the history of hip hop for HBO Canada entitled Hip Hop Evolution. Musically, Shad continues to explore new territory as well, releasing a retro pop-rock album in 2016 through taste-making independent label Arts & Crafts.

Playing hip hop, R&B, reggae, house, soul and jazz DJ Kid Soul keeps spinning tunes that touch the souls and keeps people dancing. In the early 2000’s, he was invited to tour clubs in Finland, Sweden and Estonia, showcasing his Toronto bred party formula. Despite his travels, he maintains Toronto and Canadian DJ’s are among the best owing to their exposure to diverse music. DJ Kid Soul’s own talents are a product of this global influence combined with sounds aired on local college radio stations.

As Co-Founder and resident DJ of the 90’s Remix Party, he puts music from this era at the top of his favourites and best memories. He takes special care to include new or overlooked music and not to regurgitate radio hype.
